3 Free Children’s Museums in New York City for Big Families

New York City is famous for its outstanding children’s museums. Unfortunately, when you add up the cost for your family of 5, 6, 7, or 8 to visit a New York children’s museum, the figures can quickly reach triple digits.

Luckily, there is a way your big family can enjoy New York City’s terrific children’s museums – for free! Here are three top-notch museums that offer free admission during selected days and times.

1. The Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Over a hundred years old, the world’s very first children’s museum is a great place to start your adventures. The museum is chock-full of fun – and educational! – experiences for big families, including hands-on exhibits and collaborative games. Free coat check is available, and you’re allowed to bring your own food, so you can skip the pricey snacks.

When to visit for free: On the second weekend of each month before 11 a..m, or on Wednesdays between 2 and 5 p.m.

2. The New York Hall of Science

This hands-on science and technology center offers nearly 500 biology, chemistry and physics exhibits. Your teens will appreciate the “cool” factor of this awesome museum, but there’s plenty to do for wee ones as well.  Bonus: family-focused programs such as puppet shows, live science theatre shows and family workshops are often scheduled during the free times.

When to visit for free: From September through June, on Fridays between 2 and 5 p.m., and on Sundays between 10 and 11 a.m.

3. The Children’s Museum of Manhattan

This children’s museum has a wide variety of activities, many of which give the nod to popular kid’s television shows and literature. Exhibits change frequently, so it’s a good place to return to if you visit New York often with your big family. Be aware that strollers are a no-no inside the museum.

When to visit for free: the first Friday of every month, between 5 and 8 p.m.

Visit any or all of these children’s museums with your family of 5, 6, 7, or 8. Kids and adults alike will have a stellar experience without needing to spend a dime…unless you accidentally wander into the museum gift shop, that is!
