Plan Your Next Big Family Vacation to North Carolina

Big families will love North Carolina.  There are all sorts of wonderful experiences that are perfect for families with children of all ages.  Here are just a few destinations that you and your children will love in the Tar Heel state.

If you’re looking for a great time at the beach, look no further than Currituck Outer Banks in North Carolina.  These beaches have plenty of sun and sand to offer, and they are watched over by experience lifeguards.  Even better, they are not usually very crowded.  The Currituck Outer Banks are the ideal places for families who are looking for a fun trip to the beach without the hustle, bustle, and crowding that that usually entails.

Wild Horses - 3h

But Currituck has something unique to offer beyond the usual sandcastle building, beach walking, and fishing: wild horses.  About 80 horses live at Currituck Outer Banks.  These horses are the descendants of mustangs that were brought to the area by explorers nearly five hundred years ago.  Children of all ages will love getting to see these interesting and majestic animals.

Snow Tubing 003

If you’re visiting in the winter and the beach doesn’t sound like very much fun, you might try one of North Carolina’s many ski resorts.  Or if you’re looking for something slightly more unusual, you might visit Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline Course in Seven Devils.  Hawksnest is home to the largest snow tubing park in the East, and it also has the region’s longest zipline tour.  Children five and up can participate in the Hawk Tour.  Children ten and up can experience the faster-moving Eagle Tour.

Beech Mountain 2.04 091

Beech Mountain’s sledding hill is another fun destination.  Children twelve and under can use this hill free of charge, and a snow gun helps to ensure that the sledding is always good.  The hill is open seven days a week, and it is staffed with safety personnel from the Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department.  Visitors can either bring their own plastic sleds, or they can buy them at nearby stores.

Kids who love butterflies will enjoy All-A-Flutter Butterfly Farm.  Here, workers raise Monarch butterflies for use in weddings, funerals, and other special occasions.  Farm visits are welcomed, allowing children to learn all about the life cycle, migratory patterns, and anatomy of butterflies.  At the end of the visit, a lifecycle kit with Monarch eggs and a milkweed plant can be purchased.  Your children can take these home, and you can all enjoy watching as the Monarchs go from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to beautiful butterfly.
