    Louisiana’s State Parks offer superb fishing, boating, paddling, and water sports. Your family can enjoy nature on biking and hiking trails. Numerous waterways—from lakes and bayous to swamps and lagoons—lie amid verdant hills and rich marshlands. All of the below 17 state parks offer cabins that will sleep big families of up to 8. Two parks have cabins that will sleep up to 10 and six parks offer cabins to sleep up to 14. Enjoy!

    Bayou Segnette State Park, Westwego, LA

    Just a thirty-minute drive across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, a multitude of recreational opportunities awaits visitors of all ages — boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, playgrounds and, of course, swimming in the wave pool, as well as an ecosystem that offers you the chance to spot plants, trees, and wildlife from both swamps and marshland.

    Bogue Chitto State Park, Franklinton, LA

    The 1,786-acre site includes small streams, cypress-tupelo swamps, a hardwood forest, upland forests, and a rolling landscape. Fricke’s Cave, which – despite its name – resembles more of a gorge, possesses delicate sandstone spires created when water erodes the surface underneath pebbles.  Boardwalks have been built so that visitors can admire the sandstone creations from afar, as the formations are too delicate to allow visitors to walk among them. A trip to Bogue Chitto State Park will be a full one, with a river perfect for canoeing or kayaking, 11 lakes stocked with a variety of freshwater fish, a water playground, numerous picnic pavilions, and an outdoor classroom.

    Chemin-A-Haut State Park, Bastrop, LA

    Chemin-A-Haut State Park was designed with children in mind. Two playgrounds in the day-use area are a favorite spot of the younger patrons.  The park’s swimming pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and has a wading pool. Enjoy fishing from the shore. Several varieties of freshwater species can be found there. Take advantage of the beautiful seclusion of this ideal park site

    Chicot State Park, Ville Platte, LA

    The park covers over 6,400 acres of rolling hills and water in South Central Louisiana. The cool, clear waters of Lake Chicot have yielded record freshwater catches of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and red-ear sunfish. Fishermen will enjoy the convenient boathouse, three boat launches, and boat rental facilities. An extensive hiking/backpacking trail completely encircles Lake Chicot. The Louisiana State Arboretum, now located within Chicot State Park, is home to a magnificent mature beech-magnolia forest and features an outdoor classroom and several miles of nature trails with labeled plant life native to Louisiana.

    Cypremort Point State Park, Cypremont Point, LA

    Between Grand Isle and Cameron, Cypremort Point is one of the very few locations near the Gulf of Mexico that can be reached by car. A half-mile stretch of a man-made beach provides a delightful area for relaxing, picnicking, and enjoying the water. It also affords an opportunity for fishing, crabbing, water skiing, windsurfing, and sailing.

    Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville, LA

    The 2,800-acre park is located on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. On a clear day, visitors can see the lake dotted with multi-colored sailboats of all sizes and types. The sandy beach also is a delight for sunbathers. An old railroad track that runs through the park has been converted into the Tammany Trace as a part of the Rails to Trails program. It is a wonderful route for cycling, hiking, and in-line skating.

    Jimmie Davis State Park, Chatham, LA

    Located on a peninsula on Caney Lake, Jimmie Davis State Park offers two boat launches and a fishing pier. The park also has a playground for the kids after a day on the lake. Cyclists will enjoy the park as a starting point for biking treks through the hills of North Louisiana, and nature lovers are invited to discover the beauty of the wooded land and lakefront.

    Take your pick: swimming, fishing, birding, boating of all kinds, waterskiing, camping, hiking, or just plain relaxing; your big family can do it all during your stay. One of the most popular activities for visitors of all ages is swimming at the park’s sandy beach. The beach is situated on an inlet of the lake and is protected from boats and waterskiers.

    Lake D’Arbonne State Park, Farmerville, LA

    This 655-acre park offers piney forests, rolling hills, five fishing piers, and a beautiful lake. Flat bottom boats and canoes are available to rent. The swimming pool is open from Memorial Day weekend to August 1.

    Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, St Martinville, LA

    Lake Fausse Pointe State Park occupies a 6,000-acre site in the Atchafalaya Basin. Fishing, boating, and canoeing opportunities abound. A boat launch gives visitors easy access to the labyrinth of waterways that winds through the Basin. A visitor center complex features a boat dock with rentals, and a nature center provides fun programs and activities as a way to learn about the surrounding environment. Three hiking trails and a canoe trail offer an “up close” view of the area plant and wildlife, as well.

    North Toledo Bend State Park, Zwolle, LA

    Located on Toledo Bend Reservoir, one of the country’s largest man-made reservoirs, North Toledo Bend State Park provides a venue for a wide variety of water-related activities. And for land-based activities, more than 900 acres are available for camping, picnicking, hiking, and relaxing. Available day-use facilities include a meeting room which can be reserved for group functions, a full-size swimming pool with restrooms for the summer season, and a laundry with all the conveniences for a long or short stay in the park.

    Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville, LA

    Located on the Vermilion River, Palmetto Island State Park offers a real south Louisiana outdoors experience. A boat launch provides access to the river for fishing and boating, while the interior lagoons allow canoers and kayakers an up-close look at the native plant and animal life. The visitor center complex will definitely be a must-do, with a water playground and bathhouse. A multi-purpose room can be rented for meetings, family gatherings, weddings, and many other events.

    Poverty Point Reservoir State Park, Delhi, LA

    The 2,700-acre, man-made lake that is the centerpiece for Poverty Point Reservoir State Park offers visitors an outlet for a variety of water sports and a scenic backdrop for waterfowl migration each spring and fall. Flat bottom boats and canoes are available for rental.

    Sam Houston Jones State Park, Lake Charles, LA

    Because the caretakers of this 1,087-acre park have worked to keep the land in its natural state, abundant wildlife inhabits the area. Tree-filled lagoons and mixed pine and hardwood forest combine to create a unique natural environment. The park is located just north of the most productive birding region of Louisiana. The bird watching is always excellent, but at certain times of the year, nearly 200 species of birds can be seen at or within 30 miles of the site.

    South Toledo Bend State Park, Anacoco, LA

    Pleasantly located on several small bluffs that extend over and into the Toledo Bend Reservoir, South Toledo Bend State Park offers a scenic, waterfront view from many vantage points. While the reservoir is nationally recognized as a destination for bass fishing tournaments, visitors to the park can also enjoy other outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, cycling, birding, camping, and enjoying the many forms of wildlife in the area.

    Tickfaw State Park, Springfield, LA

    Strolling through four ecosystems on over a mile of boardwalks through Tickfaw State Park, visitors can experience the sights and sounds of a cypress/tupelo swamp, a bottomland hardwood forest, a mixed pine/hardwood forest, and the Tickfaw River.

    At Tickfaw State park, you can go night hiking or listen to the swamp nightlife from the porch of your vacation cabin. Check at the Nature Center for scheduled programs. While there, view the 800-gallon aquarium stocked with fish found in the Tickfaw River. There are also displays featuring the animals, history, and culture of the area and of Louisiana.
