Plan events early in day when visiting Mt Rushmore

When visiting the Mt Rushmore, Black Hills, Rapid City, SD area; plan your activities in the morning and early afternoon to avoid late afternoon rain showers.

As Mike Modrick, Chief Meteorologist of KOTA news, explains:

“With the heat of the afternoon, the air rises and can develop into thundershowers. It is much easier for these showers to develop in the higher elevations of the Black Hills. Late May and early June also feature an active weather pattern with frequent cold fronts moving through to enhance the chance of afternoon and evening showers.”

But don’t let that scare you off! We had gorgeous weather when we visited the first week of June. It rained every day of our visit but we planned well. By the time the storms hit we were usually lounging by the indoor hotel pool, relaxing from all the activities we did in the morning and early afternoon. Plus I don’t think the temperature rose above 85 degrees. Perfect weather! 🙂
