    Big Family Travel to Washington DC

    Washington, D.C. is an excellent vacation choice for big families. Adults and children of all ages will enjoy learning about the nation’s history, political processes, and culture. With free museums, monuments, and a variety of eclectic neighborhoods, every member of the family will be delighted and engaged.

    We list 5  hotels in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan that area cater to big families. Families have a wide range of choices both in the heart of D.C. and in the surrounding area. We also list nine cities just outside DC city limits with hotels that accommodate big families. Lodging can be expensive in D.C., but with many hotels offering rooms with full kitchens or kitchenettes and complimentary breakfast, families can save on dining.

Check out Washington.org to help plan your trip.  A guided tour is an excellent way to orient the family to the city while learning some history, inside stories, and useful tips. DC By Foot offers several superb tours for donations only. Alternatively, the Hop-on, Hop-off double decker bus tours are a great way to learn about the city. These tours provide transportation to 30 attractions and neighborhoods while providing information about the sites. Two-day family tickets and discounted children’s tickets are available.     Washington, D.C. offers a staggering variety of attractions that are perfect for all ages. The 16 Smithsonian Museums are free and each offers something for everyone. Neighborhoods such as Georgetown and DuPont Circle are fascinating. Tours of the Capital Building must be scheduled online through the United States Capital website or through either your Senator or Representative. White House tours must be scheduled through your Representative. Both tours fill up quickly so be certain to plan as far in advances as possible and pay close attention to rules about what can and cannot be brought inside.

    While Washington, D.C. is fun and educational, there are some precautions that visitors should take. Because of security concerns, all persons over the age of 15 should have legal photo identification. Before entering attractions be certain to clear your bags of any items that may potentially be seen as a security threat. Keep your family together and have a plan in place in case someone gets separated from the group.  Now, relax and have a great time in this fascinating, historic, and entertaining big family friendly city!
