Kentucky has 45 State Parks, each with its own unique attributes, from shorelines to majestic mountains, from winding caves to enchanting woodlands. Kentucky State Parks contain over 300 miles of hiking trails and many lakes to enjoy water activities. We found twelve parks that offer cabins and cottages to accommodate your big family.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park
Barren River Lake State Resort Park is home to lush green rolling hills, a boastful 10,000-acre lake, and fabulous wildlife in southern Kentucky. Visit the Recreation Hall to see live reptiles, read storybooks, and discover Kentucky wildlife. Enjoy a meal at the Driftwood Restaurant. Enjoy the outdoors by hiking through the woods and down by the lake. The lake has a shoreline of 141 miles. Schedule time for swimming and fishing. Take advantage of the 22, two-bedroom, two-bath cabins offered at Barren River Lake. Each cabin has 4 beds, full kitchen, dining room, living room, picnic table, and grill. Ask to upgrade and experience the luxury of our Villas which add more space, screened-in back porch, and a gas fireplace. Open year-round. Rooms are available by late afternoon. Lodge room check-out by 11 a.m. local time. We are now pet friendly. No more than two pets are allowed per room/cottage. High-speed wireless internet service available at the lodge.

Breaks Interstate Park
At Breaks Interstate park there are plenty of options to play outdoors. Pedal boats, canoes, and a Jon Boat are available seasonally for rental by the hour or half-hour on beautiful Laurel Lake. Visitors may use these boats as a means to explore, or for fishing. A boat dock is available. More than 25 miles of hiking trails lace the park, varying from easy to difficult. Most are less than one mile long, but interconnected trails offer the more ambitious hiker a good choice of routes over varying terrain. Visit the water park which includes a 4,000 square-foot beach-entry leisure pool, four water slides, a spray ground; in-pool basketball and volleyball areas, and shade structures.
Cabins are available for accommodating larger families. Each cabin features a covered front porch with rocking chairs and a furnished lakefront back deck overlooking Laurel Lake.

Woodland Cottages
Nestled in the fringe of the forest near Beaver Pond, the four cottages are 2 bedrooms, one bath split-levels, and can sleep up to 6. One bedroom features a queen-sized bed and the other has two twin beds. The living area has a flat-screen TV, two recliners, and a queen-sized pull out sofa. Kitchens are fully furnished with a four-burner stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, cookware, dishes, and flatware. Sorry, no pets allowed.
Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park
Located in the northern portion of the Daniel Boone National Forest in the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau, Buckhorn Lake State Park has 856 acres of lush Kentucky mountain land. The surrounding forest is filled with wildlife and Buckhorn Lake has excellent fishing. Stop by the marina and ask about their fishing loaner program where you can check out free equipment. The marina has 95 open slips, two launching ramps, rental pontoon boats, and fishing boats. The lodge swimming pool is for the exclusive use of lodge and cottage guests. The public beach has a bathhouse complex for visitor convenience.

Carter Caves State Resort Park
Carter Caves State Resort Park is home to more than 20 caverns winding beneath its forested hills. Four of these caves are open for tours, available throughout the year. Visit the Carter Caves Gem Mine, located at the Welcome Center Gift Shop. Discover the above-ground beauty of Carter Caves on 33 miles of wooded nature trails. Enjoy some quiet time fishing in Smoky Valley Lake, known for trophy bass. Take in a game of miniature golf at the 18 hole course. Enjoy a meal at Tierney’s Cavern.

General Butler State Resort Park
Named for General William Orlando Butler, the family’s military fame spanned from Colonial times through the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. Today your family can enjoy a day on the lake at General Butler. Rental pedal boats, canoes, rowboats, and surf bikes are available seasonally at the Boat Dock. Borrow fishing equipment from the park and spend an afternoon fishing.
General Butler State Resort Park preserves the Butler-Turpin Historic home built in 1859. The house is a brick federal-style residence with many period pieces as well as family heirlooms.
To tour the historic home, purchase tickets at the lodge front desk at least 15 minutes prior to the tour start time. Your tour guide will meet you at the house.

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park is sure to offer something for everyone. Pontoons, canoes, kayaks, and a Jon boat available for rent so you can enjoy 1,100-acre Dewey Lake. Visit the marina for rentals. Dewey Lake has largemouth and hybrid striped bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. Don’t have a fishing pole? Ask at the park about their fishing loaner program where you can check out free equipment. Park trails provide over ten miles of hiking for all ability levels, as well as a three-mile mountain bike loop.

Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park
Kentucky Dam Village is one of three state resort parks near Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a 170,000-acre wooded peninsula bound by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The lake has an abundance of largemouth, smallmouth, Kentucky and white bass, bluegill, channel, and blue catfish, crappie, and sauger. The park’s boat dock features overnight dockage, rental fishing boats, pontoon boats, and ski boats. A swimming pool adjacent to the lodge is for the use of lodge and cottage guests only.

Or spend the afternoon fishing, you can borrow free fishing gear from the park. Enjoy the beauty surrounding Lake Barkley on one of three self-guiding trails, providing 9 miles of nature study. Seven miles are open for mountain biking. A swimming pool fronting the lodge between the lake and the lodge is for the exclusive seasonal use of lodge and cottage guests. The public beach, open seasonally, offers a volleyball court and bathhouse.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park
Natural Bridge State Resort Park is located in Powell and Wolfe Counties along the Middle Fork of the Red River, adjacent to the Red River Gorge Geologic Area and surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. Explore the beauty of natural arches and rugged sandstone cliff lines. The Natural Bridge, 65 feet tall and 78 feet long, is one of the most famous natural sandstone arches in Kentucky. From the top, visitors can view distant ridge tops and lush green valleys of what has been called “Kentucky’s Land of the Arches.”
Mill Creek Lake is a small peaceful lake surrounded by beautiful forest and towering sandstone cliffs. Bass, bluegill, black crappie, longear sunfish, green sunfish, rainbow trout, channel catfish, and black bullhead are found here. The lake is also perfect for paddling canoes and kayaks and a launch ramp is available for fishing boats.

At the park’s restaurant, you can request a table by the bird feeders and watch many common bird feeder birds while you dine. Rental pedal boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and trolling motors are available. Hike one of the seven trails that loop around the lake and through the forest areas. Take the kids to one of three playgrounds or swim at the public beach. A pool is adjacent to the lodge and is available for lodge and cottage guests.
