Located just 10 miles southwest of Rapid City, SD the trip to the falls\u00a0was beautiful as the road\u00a0meandered through tall trees and over a peaceful stream.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Update- This business has closed. I will leave this up in case it reopens in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The website explains how in 1878 gold miners working&nbsp;the&nbsp;shaft would&nbsp;use black powder to get through. The <\/span>mine had<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> been worked&nbsp;on for 20 years. However, one day&nbsp;a blast&nbsp;unexpectantly resulted&nbsp;in a blast <\/span>of icy<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> cold water.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With such a blast of water coming into the mining shaft;\u00a0there was no way they could continue working the mine, so it was shut\u00a0down.\u00a0 The underground waterfall was forgotten until 1949 when Vera Eklund on a train sightseeing trip, noticed\u00a0a stream of water coming from the side of the mountain.\u00a0 She convinced her husband to help her find the source.\u00a0 Once they saw the waterfall<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> inside the mountain they bought the land and opened it to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/20092010-149-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/20092010-149-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/20092010-149-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/20092010-149-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When we arrived at the falls, we parked our car and walked down a set of wooden steps down to the stream bed.\u00a0 The surrounding scenery was pleasing to the soul.\u00a0 Tall pine trees straddled a <\/span>15-foot<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> wide rippling <\/span>stream. Meanwhile, <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the wooded mountain set as a great background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We walked up to the little building that served as a ticket stand.&nbsp; Knowing the mine shaft would be chilly and have the sound of rushing water, I made everyone take a restroom break.&nbsp; For the six of us, it would cost the maximum charge of $27.&nbsp; Tours are self-lead so we headed up the steps to the mine.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The path leading to the falls is narrow and wet.\u00a0 The whole shaft is very dark with lighting every 10 feet or so.\u00a0 I held on to Momo&#8217;s hand as I thought the dark,\u00a0loud shaft might be a bit scary for her.\u00a0 The six of us walked single file down the 600-footh-path to the falls.\u00a0 The path has 4-foot wooden rails\u00a0to keep you from falling into the stream coming out of the mountain from the falls. We had to slow down a few times to let people coming from the falls to go past us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When we finally made it to the end, to the falls itself, it was a great disappointment. When I t<\/span>hink of waterfalls<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> I think of water beautifully cascading down.\u00a0 This was more like a fire hydrant that had been turned\u00a0on pouring down onto\u00a0one rock and bouncing onto another before streaming out the mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The water crashing in was loud. According to the website, it pours in at a rate of 8 cubic feet per second. You could feel the mist of it as you walked closer.&nbsp; We stood for a few minutes watching the &#8220;falls&#8221;.&nbsp; We looked up at the top of the mine to see where the miners had chipped away at the mountain to form the mine. Then we walked out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Total time spent in the mine &#8211; about 6 minutes.\u00a0 $27 for 6 minutes.\u00a0 I felt really bad that we had spent so much on something that was so disappointing. It&#8217;s taken me longer to write about this poor excuse of an attraction than it took for us to visit it. So my dear POMers (Parents of Many), I recommend you skip this one.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park.jpg 832w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/canyon-lake-park-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canyon-lake-park\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Canyon Lake Park<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On our way back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/09\/choice-hotels-in-mt-rushmore-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comfort Inn &amp; Suites <\/a>in Rapid City we stopped at Canyon Lake Park.&nbsp; Located on Hwy 44 or Jackson Boulevard, Rapid Creek flows through it. The park has great paths near the lake that make for a great way to stretch the kids&#8217; legs.&nbsp; The grass looks great, but be careful<\/span>!,<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> it&#8217;s full of dog and goose poop.&nbsp; My kids said it should have been called Goose Poop Park. An afternoon rainstorm was coming in so we only were able to walk out to the gazebo island and back. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dinosaur-park\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dinosaur Park<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dinosaur <\/span>Park is<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> a free park located on a hill overlooking the city.\u00a0 We had a little trouble finding it since I hadn&#8217;t looked up exactly how to get there and because we didn&#8217;t see any signs for it.\u00a0 But we could see some of the concrete dinosaurs from highway 44 and decided to take some neighborhood roads to get closer.\u00a0Finally, we saw a sign and drove up to the gift shop. Since it had started raining we decided to go in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The gift shop was a great pit stop.&nbsp; They had all the usual trinkets and t-shirts but the t-shirts were cheap. We bought 4 shirts and for some reason a coon cap for the Boy for $40.&nbsp; There&#8217;s also an eating area that looks like a soda fountain counter.&nbsp; The food was cheap too.&nbsp; I recommend stopping at lunch as you could get a hot dog and drink for 99 cents. The menu had many&nbsp;reasonably priced items.&nbsp;You could have ice cream too and feed everyone on the cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The\u00a0staff was very nice.\u00a0 The Boy knocked over a low glass shelf breaking it.\u00a0 The staff was understanding, &#8220;These things happen&#8221; they said.\u00a0 All in all a great pit stop.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1.jpg 832w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0070-1-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The rain cleared\u00a0so we went to check out the 7 concrete dinosaurs\u00a0which were built\u00a0in the 1930s.\u00a0 There were a lot of steps leading to the dinosaurs.\u00a0 Not stroller friendly, so remember to bring the baby carrier.\u00a0The dinosaurs are spread out on the concrete path.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072.jpg 832w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sixsuitcasetravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/PIC_0072-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I&#8217;m sure your kids could tell you what each one is, but I can&#8217;t.&nbsp; A dinosaur is a dinosaur in my book.&nbsp; My kids liked the park.
