What’s Happening Wednesday
Cherry Blossom Festival
It is said that Washington DC is beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. In 1912, a gift of 3000 cherry trees from the Mayor of Tokyo was given to the city of Washington DC. The gift symbolized and honored the friendship between the US and Japan. Again in 1965 the gift of trees was given, this time there were 3800.
Each year since 1935, Washington, DC holds a Cherry Blossom Festival. More than a million people visit the city during the festival which runs this year from March 27 through April 10.
Next year will mark the centennial of the original planting of trees. Next year’s 100 year celebration will be held March 20 – April 27, 2012. What a great time to visit! I recommend making plans now if you would like to take your big family.
