    Tucked away in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, right next to the Snowbird Ski Resort, small crowds, a rustic feel, and a laid-back vibe make Alta popular with families who take their skiing seriously.     • Budget tip for beginners – Sunnyside at 3 Program allows you to ride the Sunnyside and Albion beginner lifts from 3-4:30 daily for a significantly discounted price.

    • Utah Transit Authority runs two separate buses that bring riders to the slopes, the 944 runs from downtown Sandy and the 953 route originates in Salt Lake City.

    Beaver Mountain, Logan, Utah

    Located right on the Utah-Idaho border in the northeastern part of the state, Beaver Mountain, or “the Beav” as locals call it, offers something for every level of skier or snowboarder. Sixteen of its 48 trails fall into the easiest category, while 25 percent earn a black diamond. Three lifts, a tow bar, and two surface conveyors — The LittleEEZY and The BigEEZY — serve Beaver’s two terrain parks and 880 skiable acres.

    • For public transportation to the ski area, check out “The Beaver Bus”. The daily shuttle service leaves from the “First Dam” parking area at 8 AM and returns by leaving Beaver Mountain at 4 PM.

    Brian Head Resort, Brian Head, Utah

    At the other end of the state, the Brian Head Resort sits closer to Las Vegas than Salt Lake City. Brian Head’s proximity to Bryce Canyon National Park — about an hour and 10 minutes drive — and Zion National Park — an hour and 20 minutes — makes it perfect for a ski and sightseeing vacation with the family. Brian Head consists of 650 skiable acres spread out over two peaks. Along with Utah’s highest base elevation of 9,600 feet, Brian Head takes tubing to the next level with two runs — the 550 feet long Navajo Tube Hill and the Giant Steps Tube Hill — with a 100-foot vertical drop over its 600-foot slope. Brian Head’s Winter Sports School offers ski lessons for kids as young as 3 years old.

    Brighton Ski Resort, Brighton, Utah

    While extremely popular with locals, families with young children also love Brighton for its kids under 10 ski-free policy. Along with some exhilarating expert runs, the ski area has lots of gentle and interesting beginner trails, some that even weave through the mountain’s gorgeous aspens. Located at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, the Brighton ski area sees a non-stop parade of winter storms, with 500 inches of light, fluffy snow each year. Many consider Brighton’s snowboard park to be Utah’s best. Getting to Brighton takes about an hour by car from Salt Lake City.

    • There are two park-n-ride lots at the base of the mountain for carpoolers and ski bus users. There is one smaller lot is at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon (arrive early to avoid a full lot) and a second, larger lot at 6200 S. and Wasatch Blvd. Additional lots are available throughout the valley.  

    Cherry Peak Resort, Richmond, Utah

    Located in the Cherry Canyon in northern Utah, Cherry Peak — which opened for skiing for the 2015-16 season — offers some of the most reasonably priced lift tickets in the state. While the hour and 45-minute drive up from Salt Lake City may seem like a hike compared to getting to most of the state’s ski areas, a range of low-priced, family lift ticket packages makes it worth the trip. Night sessions, a magic carpet lift, and reasonably priced tickets make Cherry Peak’s tubing hill extremely popular with families, as well.
